AI is overhyped.
There, I said it. Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing about it?
AI this, AI that. Buy my prompt course. 10x your business with ChatGPT blah blah blah.
Yawn.
But there’s one reason this all excites me as a marketer and business owner.
Artificial intelligence makes average and reasonable information readily available for free. This will eliminate 90% of the people in my field and other industries.
Leaving only the top 10% with viable businesses.
This is a good thing.
You see, you can currently use AI to build a website, write the copy, source images and create a new logo.
You can even get AI to write you a marketing plan and the content needed to implement it.
But here’s the kicker.
It’ll be an average website with average copy and average images, and you’ll have an average marketing plan with average content, along with every single one of your AI-using competitors.
You see, what nobody talks about is that artificial intelligence in its current form will always be tied to being average because it learns from a vast amount of data. What do you get when you learn from a vast amount of data?
Average.
Because the data set is a mixture of terrible and great, with absolutely everything in between.
There is even research to suggest that AI in its current form will become more stupid as a lot of the content it creates (with our help) isn’t great, but it learns from that not-so-great content. Thus, the average is becoming worse over time.
So, in the near future, when everyone is average because they’ve used ChatGPT to create their marketing material.
People will need to work out how to be better than average to attract leads, nurture them and make sales.
Which means they’ll need expertise.
Make sense as to why AI is overhyped?
Let’s look at an example.
I wasn’t happy with the carousel-style posts I was using on LinkedIn.
They were clearly made by someone who has no idea about design (me).
So, I used artificial intelligence to generate a template that performed 5 times better than my design.
This quickly took me from poor to average.
So, guess what I needed to do next?
Talk to an expert.
Which I’m now doing, and the designs he came up with outperformed the AI-generated ones by three times, using the same content.
And this chain of events will be true for almost ALL lines of business that have just gone from poor to average with AI.
So yes, AI is amazing, but only if you want to get from poor to average.
Solely relying on AI for your marketing will quickly make it very difficult for you to compete in your marketplace, as you won’t be able to stand out from competitors.
And what do people prioritise when they can’t tell the difference between different providers and solutions?
Price.
And I’m sure you don’t want to be in a price war.
It’s a surefire race to the bottom and diminishing profit margins.
If, instead, you want to be the go-to business in your industry, charge the prices you want to charge and only work with the people you want to work with, then you need to talk to an expert.
So if you’re ready to step away from average and want to grow a business, your competitors will be jealous of…
